About this position
The Earth Research Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara is recruiting one or more postdoctoral scholars to join the Groundwater Research Hub, a new five-year research center focused on groundwater science, water stress, and the policy responses that shape groundwater management. The project uses large observational datasets to understand how aquifers behave under stress and how management and policy interventions influence outcomes, linking global evidence to local decision-making.
The postdoc will work with Professor Scott Jasechko and Professor Debra Perrone and will be embedded in an interdisciplinary research environment that connects the natural sciences, law, and policy. The role is designed for an independent scholar who will develop a substantial research agenda, from framing research questions and assembling evidence through publication and, where appropriate, communication to policy audiences.
Depending on the selected candidate’s strengths, the research may emphasize the physical behavior of aquifers under stress, the quantitative analysis of groundwater governance and interventions, or the connections between these areas. The Hub also provides access to groundwater data holdings and staff data scientists, supports conference travel and international collaboration, and encourages postdoctoral scholars to build collaborations and develop their own research trajectory.
The position is part of a collaborative research and mentoring environment that also includes opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers while working toward research independence.
