About this position

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is seeking a full-time postdoctoral scholarship holder in the field of redox flow batteries. This position is based within the ELCAT research group in the Faculty of Applied Engineering, which is renowned for its pioneering work in electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering. The successful candidate will actively participate in the European Research Council-funded RECHARGE project, led by Professor Jonas Hereijgers, aiming to develop the next generation of redox flow batteries for sustainable energy storage and industry.

ELCAT offers a vibrant research environment with over 50 researchers and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. The group’s scientific activities focus on the development of advanced electrochemical reactors and batteries, contributing to a greener and more sustainable society. As a postdoctoral scholar, you will conduct high-quality research on redox flow batteries, specifically developing and testing 3D electrodes, studying hydrodynamics and dynamic flow regimes, and designing stack and scale-up solutions. You will also oversee and maintain the redox flow battery lab, supervise PhD students, and contribute to ongoing and new research projects, including attracting national and international funding.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Engineering, (Electro)Chemical Engineering, Applied Engineering, or equivalent, with relevant international experience in redox flow batteries and expertise in electrochemical engineering. Strong experimental research skills in this area are essential, and experience in scaling-up and stacking batteries is highly valued. Fluency in English (preferably C1 level) is required, along with demonstrated research and teaching competencies, independence, and excellent academic results. Knowledge of fundraising and project proposal writing, as well as experience supervising graduate students, are considered assets. Recommendation letters are highly encouraged.

The position offers a full-time appointment for 12 months, renewable after positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to the pay scales for contract research staff (Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP). Most work will be conducted at Campus Drie Eiken, providing a dynamic and stimulating environment. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

To apply, submit your application via the University of Antwerp’s online platform by February 26, 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, and reference letters. For application-related questions, contact [email protected]; for job-specific inquiries, reach out to Professor Jonas Hereijgers at [email protected]. Join a forward-thinking institution and contribute to cutting-edge research in sustainable energy storage.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
