Postdoctoral Scientist in Causal Inference Applied to Compound Extreme Events Ghent University in Belgium

Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral scientist position in the CausalHeat (FWO) research project, focusing on causal inference applied to compound extreme events. The project aims to quantify and explain the causal dynamics underlying dry and humid hot extremes by disentangling the interactions between land, atmosphere, and ecosystem processes. It seeks to identify dominant drivers of compound heat events, assess their propagation through ecohydrological systems, and evaluate impacts on ecosystem resilience and vulnerability across biomes.

Using information-theoretic causal inference approaches and observational data, the research investigates how vegetation–climate feedbacks shape the development, persistence, and spatial variability of hot extremes. The ultimate goal is to improve prediction of heat events and their implications for water, carbon, and energy cycles under climate change.

The successful candidate will conduct research, manage and coordinate project activities, develop scientific tools, disseminate results via publications, project website, and conferences, and contribute to new research avenues within the group. The position is based in the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Department BW20 - Omgeving, at Ghent University, Belgium.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Engineering, Climate, Hydrology, or Computer Sciences, with proficiency in numerical modelling and computer programming (including Python). Experience analyzing large datasets and supervising PhD students is required. Candidates should have an excellent command of English, a creative and analytical mindset, and the ability to work collaboratively.

The position offers a contract of definite duration for 2 years, starting September 2026, with remuneration according to salary scale PD1 to PD4.
