About this position
The University of Birmingham is recruiting a part-time Research Associate to join Dr Darren Ting’s research group in the Department of Inflammation and Ageing, School of Infection, Inflammation and Immunology, College of Medicine and Health, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The project focuses on developing novel antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) to combat bacterial and fungal corneal infections and address antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The research will assess antimicrobial efficacy, safety, long-term stability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), and local tissue bioavailability using microbiological, pharmacological, ophthalmological, and drug-delivery approaches.
Research activities include minimum inhibitory concentration and antibiofilm assays, cytotoxicity testing with human cell lines and red blood cells, and ex vivo experiments using porcine whole-eye models. The successful candidate will use HPLC/MS, analyse and interpret data, contribute to research protocols and publications, troubleshoot experiments, and support students and researchers in a collaborative laboratory environment.
Applicants should hold a relevant first degree in microbiology, biomedical science, pharmacology, or a related discipline. Experience in microbiology, cell culture, molecular biology, ex vivo models, or techniques such as ELISA, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry is desirable. Strong analytical, communication, organisational, problem-solving, and teamwork skills are expected.
The role is 0.8 FTE, equivalent to 30 hours per week, on a fixed-term contract up to August 2028. The full-time equivalent starting salary is normally £33,002–£35,608, with potential progression to £39,906. The post is funded by the Sight Research UK Translational Research Award. The closing date is 9 November 2026 according to the application portal.
Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Darren Ting at [email protected]. Applications should be submitted through the University of Birmingham employee careers portal.
