About this position
This research contract is hosted by the Istituto di Geoscienze (GEO) of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Perugia, continuing the scientific line of the former Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica (IRPI). The project sits within a wider research framework on water resources and climate impacts, and it is explicitly designed to address drought processes in a changing climate.
The selected researcher will work on the generation, evolution, and propagation of droughts, with particular attention to the transition from meteorological drought to agricultural and hydrological drought across different spatial and temporal scales. The project brings together hydrological processes such as precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, snow, groundwater recharge, and surface runoff, alongside human pressures including water withdrawals, reservoir regulation, and land-use change.
The activity is strongly oriented toward integrated water resources management and the development of methods and tools for drought monitoring, forecasting, risk assessment, and decision support. It combines observed in situ data, satellite observations, climate reanalyses, projections, hydrological modelling, and artificial intelligence techniques to evaluate water availability and the balance between water demand and supply under climate-change scenarios.
The work is carried out under the scientific direction of Christian Massari, with Stefania Camici and Silvia Barbetta as co-scientific contacts. The programme is anchored in the scientific areas of hydrology, geosciences, environmental science, and related engineering disciplines, within the CNR research environment in Perugia.
The contract is linked to the projects SECLI III, BEAVER, and ECOMED2, and the advert emphasises both the scientific and operational relevance of the work for drought analysis and water management in the context of global change.
