About this position

Nanyang Technological University’s LUMINOUS! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays is seeking a Research Fellow in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) nanophotonics and nanopatterning. The position is part of the NRF Competitive Research Programme project “Extreme UV Nanophotonics: Quantum Control and Meta-Optical Design of Extreme Ultraviolet Light Sources.”

The researcher will develop chip-scale, free-electron-driven EUV sources and approximately 10 nm electron-beam-lithography masks. The work combines experimental photonics, electron optics, nanofabrication and semiconductor-device engineering to produce high-brightness short-wavelength emission and demonstrate EUV nanopatterning.

Key activities include designing and assembling high-vacuum and UHV systems, custom vacuum chambers and optical setups; fabricating cathode nanostructures such as ZnO, graphene and carbon nanotubes; developing Si/Mo multilayer anode structures; and integrating devices through sputtering, CVD and high-vacuum bonding or sealing. The researcher will also design Si3N4-on-silicon EUV masks using electron-beam lithography and dry etching to achieve approximately 10 nm features.

The role includes electron-beam and device characterization, cold-cathode field-emission testing, EUV detection and spectral analysis, grazing-incidence optical measurements, hardware integration and packaging. A major objective is the proof-of-concept demonstration of EUV nanopatterning with sub-10 nm alignment precision, alongside efforts to scale single-chip devices into higher-power multichip arrays.

Based at NTU’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, LUMINOUS! provides cleanroom, characterization and interdisciplinary research facilities spanning materials science, device engineering and system integration. The Research Fellow will lead laboratory workflows, support safety and technical operations, mentor junior researchers and students, and disseminate results through publications, conferences, patents and project documentation.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD and have prior postdoctoral experience in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Photonics, or a related field. Requirements include significant experience with electron-beam systems and beam–matter interactions; design and maintenance of high-vacuum and UHV systems; chip-scale packaging and high-vacuum bonding or sealing; hands-on nanofabrication using electron-beam lithography, photolithography, sputtering, CVD, and reactive-ion or metal dry etching; fabrication and characterization of nanoscale and multilayer thin-film and Si3N4 membrane structures; and experience with EUV or soft X-ray systems, EUV detectors, and grazing-incidence optics. Experience with cold cathodes and field-emission characterization, or nanophotonics/meta-optics and tools such as FIB, COMSOL, Ansys, or MEEP, is sought. Candidates should have a strong publication record, excellent scientific communication and technical writing skills, leadership and organizational abilities, laboratory and safety-management experience, mentoring and collaboration skills, and the independence to troubleshoot complex experimental systems.
