About this position
The University of Melbourne is seeking a part-time Research Fellow for a 12-month fixed-term project on the political ecology of fire and climate change adaptation in the Philippines and Timor-Leste.
Based in the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, the successful candidate will conduct critical ethnographic research with Indigenous and rural communities, examining fire politics, gendered livelihoods, agrarian change and climate resilience. The role involves engaging respectfully with local knowledge systems, NGOs and other stakeholders while developing equitable, long-term research partnerships.
The Research Fellow will produce scholarly publications, reports and presentations, contribute to research proposals, seminars and conferences, and support the supervision and mentoring of students and junior researchers. The position offers interdisciplinary collaboration across human geography, environmental hazards, climate change and Indigenous knowledge.
Applicants should hold or be close to completing a PhD in human geography, anthropology, development studies or a related discipline. Experience with ethnographic methods, political ecology, rural communities, Indigenous knowledge systems, fieldwork logistics and international publication is important. English and local-language communication skills, or a willingness to learn Filipino, Tetum and Indigenous languages, are expected.
