About this position
Nottingham Trent University is recruiting two fixed-term researchers for the Eco-SEv project in ecosystem acoustics, a government-funded initiative focused on next-generation biodiversity monitoring technologies.
The roles are based in the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences at Nottingham Trent University and involve work on acoustic monitoring, biodiversity assessment, and ecosystem health across agricultural, forestry, conservation, and natural environments. The project uses autonomous acoustic sensors, ecological expertise, and advanced analytical approaches to develop scalable tools for environmental monitoring and natural capital assessment.
Open roles: Research Fellow in Ecosystem Acoustics and Research Associate in Ecosystem Acoustics. Both posts are full-time and fixed term for 18 months.
Research Fellow: lead NTU's contribution, design and deliver acoustic monitoring studies, analyse ecological and acoustic datasets, report outputs, and coordinate validation activities with partners in the UK and Kenya.
Research Associate: support field and analytical work, including deployment of acoustic monitoring equipment, ecological surveys, biodiversity ground-truthing, data processing, and stakeholder engagement.
Preferred background and skills: ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, geography, bioacoustics, ecoacoustics, zoology, or related environmental disciplines; ecological field research; biodiversity monitoring; statistical modelling; GIS; R and/or Python; acoustic data processing; ecoacoustic software; large biodiversity databases; environmental sensors; remote sensing; and machine learning.
Funding and conditions: the project is government funded. Salaries are advertised at £33,739-£38,825 per annum for the Research Fellow and £29,352-£33,739 per annum for the Research Associate.
Deadline: 17 November 2026. Interview date: week commencing 30 November 2026.
How to apply: use the Nottingham Trent University vacancies portal and submit an application before the closing date. Informal queries may be sent to Andy Gill and Antonio Uzal Fernandez at the emails listed in the advert.

What's required
Applicants should ideally have experience in ecological field research and biodiversity monitoring, with skills in data analysis, statistical modelling, GIS, and programming in R and/or Python. Familiarity with ecoacoustic methods, acoustic data processing and analysis, ecoacoustic software and platforms, and management of large biodiversity databases is highly desirable. Experience with environmental sensors, remote sensing technologies, and machine learning approaches would be advantageous. The post is aimed in particular at early-career researchers for the Research Associate role, while the Research Fellow role leads the university's contribution to the project.
