About this position
The University of Edinburgh invites applications for a Russian PhD in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. The programme is designed for researchers who want to make an original contribution to Russian studies within an active international research community in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Research may focus on social, political and cultural perspectives on the Russian language; transnational Russian culture; Russian and comparative literature; media, film and theatre studies; or Russian-English translation and interpreting. Interdisciplinary projects connecting Russian studies with linguistics, politics, comparative literature, film studies or intermediality may also be supported. Students work under the guidance of at least two supervisors and complete a thesis of approximately 80,000 words.
Full-time study normally takes three years, while part-time study takes six years and is available only to applicants who do not require a Student visa. The programme offers January and September start dates. For the September 2027 start, the application deadline is 30 June 2027; for the January 2028 start, the deadline is 31 October 2027.
Applicants normally need a UK 2:1 honours degree and a master's degree, or equivalent qualifications, in a related subject. Required materials include a 500-word personal statement, research proposal, approximately 3,000 words of written work, academic certificates and transcripts, certified translations where applicable, two references and evidence of English proficiency. IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each component is one accepted option. Prior publications are not required.
This is an admissions opportunity rather than a guaranteed funded studentship. Candidates should investigate scholarships and other funding sources independently. Tuition fees and living costs apply, and the University cannot guarantee teaching or tutoring work. Applications are submitted online through the University of Edinburgh programme page.
