About this position
Stanford University's SCALE Initiative is seeking at least one postdoctoral fellow for a qualitative education research fellowship under the mentorship of Professor Susanna Loeb, with Carly Robinson as an additional mentor. The fellow will design and conduct rigorous qualitative studies examining the implementation of educational programs, policies, and interventions in empirical research settings.
Research may be embedded in larger quantitative evaluations, including randomized controlled trials, and may address implementation processes, contextual factors, and conditions shaping program effectiveness. Responsibilities can include interviews, focus groups, observations, qualitative data coding and analysis, research publications, reports for external stakeholders, and partnerships with educators, school districts, and education organizations.
The SCALE Initiative studies educational opportunity, equity, tutoring, artificial intelligence in K-12 education, and the conditions that enable effective education policy and practice. The postdoctoral fellow will join a collaborative research community, receive mentorship in research design, study implementation, publication, and career development, and participate in professional development and scholarly activities through SCALE and Stanford's Graduate School of Education.
Applicants must hold a PhD in education, sociology, public policy, or a related field and demonstrate expertise in qualitative research design, data collection, coding, and analysis. Experience with interviews and focus groups, proficiency in Dedoose or NVivo, knowledge of PK-12 education policy and the U.S. education system, strong communication and project management skills, and collaborative flexibility are required. Preferred experience includes integrating qualitative research into quantitative evaluations or randomized controlled trials, studying program implementation and effectiveness, developing education partnerships, and producing academic and policy-oriented research outputs.
The appointment is for one year, from August 1, 2027 through July 31, 2028, with renewal potential. The expected base pay is $82,000-$85,000. Applications remain open until filled, with review beginning January 19, 2027. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV with three references, and one representative writing sample as a single PDF through the application portal.
