About this position
The University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for its Social Anthropology PhD, beginning in September 2027. The programme is offered full-time over three years or part-time over six years through the School of Social and Political Science.
Students develop an original contribution to knowledge through an extended research project, usually involving long-term ethnographic fieldwork, alongside systematic training in anthropological and social research methods. Interdisciplinary research is welcomed, with access to expertise across law, geography, history, classics, archaeology and art.
Research interests include political violence, law and peace; migration and displacement; arts, media and cultural heritage; global, public and mental health; diagnostics and wellbeing; infrastructures, innovation and social justice; environment, resources and sustainability; kinship; gender, generations and inheritance; sexual and reproductive politics; religion and public life; and creative, multimodal, more-than-human and collaborative ethnographies. The programme has global scope, including established strengths in Europe, South Asia, Africa, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
Applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in social anthropology, or a 2:1 degree in another subject plus a postgraduate master’s degree in social anthropology. Before applying, candidates should contact potential supervisors to discuss their proposed research and confirm suitable supervision. The application requires a personal statement, research proposal, two references, transcripts and degree certificates, and evidence of English-language proficiency where applicable.
The application deadline is 29 June 2027 for the 13 September 2027 programme start. There is no application fee. Funding is not automatic; applicants should investigate School of Social and Political Science scholarships, UK Research Council awards and other funding sources. Estimated Edinburgh living costs for 2026–2027 are £18,504 per year.
