About this position
This research fellowship is offered by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command – Chemical Biological Center (DEVCOM-CBC) through the ORISE program. The project places participants with a team of scientists and researchers working in a laboratory environment focused on spectroscopy and materials science.
As a participant, you will gain hands-on experience with spectroscopic methods and materials science procedures, alongside general laboratory techniques and skills. The work may include synthesizing or fabricating particles or substrates and developing a basic understanding of how materials are prepared and studied. You may work with UV-visible spectrometers, fluorescence instrumentation, Raman spectroscopy, SEMs, microscopes, lasers, and other laboratory equipment for data collection and analysis.
The fellowship is designed to build practical research experience in a collaborative setting. You will engage in critical thinking with other researchers, strengthening teamwork, communication, problem solving, and confidence in using laboratory instrumentation. The experience also emphasizes reading, replicating, and modifying procedures from the scientific literature under mentor guidance.
DEVCOM-CBC is the primary Department of Defense technical organization for non-medical chemical and biological defense. Its research environment combines chemistry, biology, physiology, and engineering expertise to develop technological solutions for chemical and biological defense challenges.
