About this position
This ORISE fellowship places the selected researcher with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command - Chemical Biological Center (DEVCOM-CBC), a Department of Defense research center focused on chemical and biological defense. The project is centered on spectroscopy and materials science, giving the participant hands-on experience with laboratory methods used for data collection, analysis, and materials preparation.
The fellow will work alongside scientists and researchers in an active research environment and may use a range of analytical and characterization tools, including UV-visible spectrometers, fluorescence instrumentation, Raman spectroscopy, SEMs, microscopes, lasers, and other laboratory equipment. The work may also include synthesizing or fabricating particles or substrates to build a deeper understanding of materials science.
The opportunity emphasizes practical laboratory training, critical thinking with research colleagues, and exposure to cutting-edge work in an established government research facility. The appointment is administered through ORISE and may be short-term, summer, or yearlong depending on the project and participant arrangement.
