Methodology: The research will involve reconstructing the evolutionary history of key metabolic pathways (e.g., pstSCAB, pho regulon, phosphonate pathways for phosphorus; nitrate/nitrite transporters, ammonium uptake, cyanide degradation for nitrogen), analyzing gene transfer events, and modeling the influence of genomic innovations on nutrient limitation in Proterozoic and contemporary ecosystems. The student will have opportunities to generate new datasets and develop novel phylogenomic tools.
Training & Skills: The supervisory team, led by Professor Patricia Sanchez-Baracaldo and co-supervised by Dr. Lewis Alcott, Dr. Fanny Monteiro, and Dr. Joanne Boden, will provide tailored training in comparative genomics, molecular evolution, phylogenetics, and computer programming (e.g., Shell Scripting, R, Python). These skills are highly transferrable and valuable for careers in evolutionary biology, microbial genomics, and bioinformatics.
Funding: The Bristol Postgraduate Research Scholarship covers full tuition fees, a UKRI stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26), and up to £2,100 per year for research expenses, for a total registration period of 4 years. The project begins in September 2026.
Eligibility: Applicants should have a strong academic background in biology, earth sciences, environmental science, or related fields. Programming skills in C/C++, Python, R, or Matlab are advantageous. Interest in evolutionary biology, genomics, and biogeochemical cycles is essential.
