About this position
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, invites applications for three PhD positions in evolutionary ecology, evolutionary genomics, and ecosystem science. The four-year Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project investigates how biotic and abiotic selection shape species interactions, community assembly, evolution, and ecosystem functioning in sub-Arctic lakes of Southern Greenland.
The three projects focus on: (1) evolutionary ecology of copepods, including phenotypic and genetic variation, fieldwork, laboratory rearing, molecular ecology, genomics, bioinformatics, and possible evolutionary simulations; (2) stickleback evolutionary genomics, examining adaptive capacity, evolvable traits, population genetics, quantitative genetics, genomic data analysis, bioinformatics, and potential forward-time simulations; and (3) ecosystem ecology and evolution of stickleback, involving fish and invertebrate surveys, ecosystem-function measurements, laboratory rearing, and phenotyping.
Successful candidates will be supervised by Dr Blake Matthews and/or Dr Philine Feulner, with co-supervision from Prof. Catherine Peichel or Prof. Claudia Bank. The consortium includes Eawag, the University of Bern, the Technical University of Zvolen, and the University of Edinburgh. Candidates should hold a master's degree in ecology, evolutionary biology, organismal biology, or environmental science and be motivated to work collaboratively in an international research environment.
The workplace and employment are at Eawag in Kastanienbaum, Switzerland. The positions are available from 1 January 2027 or by arrangement. Apply online by 31 October 2026 or until the positions are filled.
