About this position
This two-year postdoctoral position at Aarhus University is part of the SmartField project, a cross-organizational effort focused on understanding nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural fields and developing improved mitigation and accounting methods for farm and national scales.
The project centers on developing a Tier 3, model-based national inventory of N₂O emissions from cultivation of soils in Denmark. The successful candidate will help design and implement the modelling framework, support the data pipeline, and build and maintain spatio-temporal datasets covering soils, cropping systems, and field management. The work also includes calculating and evaluating inventories, comparing them with alternative approaches, and testing scenarios that examine how mitigation technologies and management measures could reduce emissions.
The postdoc will contribute to a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification system for transparent and science-based reporting of progress in reducing agricultural field N₂O emissions. The role involves close collaboration with colleagues developing and testing process-oriented models and with specialists responsible for the national greenhouse gas inventory.
The position is shared between the Department of Environmental Science and the Department of Agroecology under the Faculty of Technical Sciences, and is hosted by the Land-CRAFT Center at Aarhus University. The research environment combines expertise in greenhouse gas emissions, sustainability transition, soil and agricultural systems, advanced computing, and a broad national and international network.
The host departments emphasize an international, collaborative, and supportive research culture with access to laboratories, greenhouses, semi-field and field-scale facilities, and advanced computing capacity. The role is based in Aarhus with some work-related and meeting activities in Roskilde.

What's required
A PhD in agronomy, soil science, data science, environmental sciences, engineering, agroecology, biology, or a related field is required. Applicants should have experience working with models and with managing and analyzing large datasets. Experience with models related to nitrogen/carbon turnover in soil is considered an advantage but is not required. The candidate should have documented experience in scientific writing and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals, be able to communicate effectively in English both written and oral, and have good collaboration skills with the ability to work independently and proactively.
How to apply
Submit the application through Aarhus University’s recruitment system via the job advertisement. The application must be in English and include a CV, degree certificate, complete publication list, statement of future research plans, information about research activities, teaching portfolio, and verified information on previous teaching experience if any.
