About this position

The University of Cologne, in collaboration with the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University Bonn and Bergische University Wuppertal, invites applications for up to 13 funded doctoral positions within the Research Training Group (RTG) “Template-Designed Organic Electronics – TIDE”. This interdisciplinary program, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), offers a unique opportunity for research-oriented training in the rapidly evolving field of organic electronics.

TIDE brings together 12 research groups from the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, focusing on organic synthesis, surface and interface sciences, device physics and applications, ultrafast spectroscopy, and quantum chemical theory and modelling. The program is structured in cohorts, with the third cohort starting in April 2027 and running for three years. Each doctoral position is associated with a specific research group, allowing candidates to engage deeply with cutting-edge topics in materials science, chemistry, and physics.

Successful applicants will join a vibrant cohort of approximately 25 members, benefit from advanced interdisciplinary training courses, and participate in a three-month international research stay. The RTG fosters a diverse and inclusive working environment, supporting equal opportunities and work-life balance. Flexible working time models and occupational health management are also provided.

Applicants should hold or be about to obtain a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline, with excellent academic results. Prior experience in organic electronics or related areas is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate motivation and a strong interest in collaborative, interdisciplinary research. Application materials include a cover letter, a motivation statement outlining the preferred project, CV, copies of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates, and a list of publications, talks, or poster contributions.

Positions are funded by the DFG and based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the German public sector pay scale, part-time (up to 75%), and limited to three years. The program encourages applications from women, individuals with disabilities, and those with special needs, in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Applications should be submitted online via the University of Cologne job portal (reference number Wiss2605-03) by 1 September 2026. For further information, candidates may contact the RTG Speaker Professor Klaus Meerholz ([email protected]) or Vice Speaker Professor Arne Lützen ([email protected]). More details about available projects can be found at https://tide.uni-koeln.de/open-positions.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading European research consortium and advance your career in organic electronics, materials science, and interdisciplinary research.
