About this position
This postdoctoral fellowship is based at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command’s Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) within the Expeditionary Medical Systems Department. The work centers on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to combat casualty care, with the selected fellow joining data scientists and systems engineers on advanced modeling projects that support the Army’s mission to optimize combat casualty care.
The research environment combines digital twin concepts, simulation, multimodal data fusion, and clinically oriented decision support. The fellow will contribute to projects spanning discrete event simulation for workflows and logistics, deep learning for forecasting and anomaly detection, physics-informed and hybrid neural models, reinforcement learning for process optimization, and generative methods for synthetic data and edge-case scenario generation.
Other areas include computer vision for extracting clinically relevant information from medical imagery, video, and operational sensors; multimodal models that combine vision, text, audio, physiological signals, and structured telemetry; and vision-language/foundation models adapted for natural language interaction with visual and clinical data. The role also includes building scalable data pipelines, maintaining near real-time synchronization between physical and digital systems, and connecting predictive models and simulations to visualization tools for actionable operator insights.
The fellowship sits within a military medical research setting at Fort Detrick, Maryland, and is administered through ORISE for the Department of Defense.
