About this position
This post-doctorate fellowship is hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Division of Regulatory Science and Compliance within the Office of Readiness and Response in Atlanta, Georgia. The project sits within the Federal Select Agent Program, which regulates work involving select agents and toxins and supports the safe and secure conduct of research in highly controlled laboratory environments.
The fellowship is centered on regulatory microbiology, biosafety, and biocontainment. Under the guidance of mentor Shaw Gargis, the participant will contribute to activities that support oversight of regulated laboratories and the development of scientific and programmatic guidance. The work includes reviewing requests from regulated laboratories, developing guidance for the regulated community, conducting literature reviews on biological agents and toxins, and collecting and analyzing program data.
The opportunity also offers experience in creating training materials for inspectors, supporting outreach to the regulated community and external partners, and contributing to initiatives intended to improve CDC regulatory programs. The fellow may engage with microbiologists and subject matter experts across CDC and other federal agencies, broadening exposure to regulatory science, policy development, and strategic planning related to FSAP oversight.
This is a research and policy-oriented training environment rather than a traditional laboratory fellowship, with emphasis on scientific regulation, biosafety, and public-health protection in a federal setting.
