About this position
This doctoral fellowship is hosted by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. The project sits within the Blast Induced Neurotrauma (BINT) Branch and focuses on understanding how repeated exposure to tactical training environments may affect the human brain even when there is no diagnosable injury.
The fellow will join a small, experienced research and engineering group that has spent the past decade conducting field studies in operational settings and refining methods to improve measurement in challenging environments. The work is explicitly field-based and coordinated with military tactical training, so the position combines on-site research with analysis and reporting.
The role offers substantial involvement across the research workflow. The selected fellow may contribute to neuro-pupillary testing, assessments of paratroopers who have sustained high-magnitude head impacts, and the development of analytical approaches to identify deviations from normative reflex patterns. The project also includes evaluating new technologies for this research area and applying engineering software and computer programming to analyze data and support interpretation.
The fellowship is designed to provide a mentored, research-based educational experience while contributing directly to WRAIR’s mission in blast environment characterization and brain health research. The fellow will prepare briefings, technical reports, and manuscripts for publication, and will gain experience working on human performance and neurotrauma questions that matter to U.S. service members.
The appointment may also involve travel to various research sites in the United States and overseas.
