About this position
This internship/fellowship is based at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command - Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience, within the Integrated Systems Biology Branch. The project is centered on integrative biology approaches to military-relevant health, with a focus on understanding the etiology of health problems and developing solutions that support performance, resilience, and readiness.
Participants will work under a mentor in a research environment that combines animal studies, human studies, computational simulations, and biologics from human samples. The Medical Readiness Systems Biology program emphasizes the identification and characterization of biomarkers related to PTSD, pain, and host responses to pathogens and radiation.
Learning opportunities include whole genome sequencing, metabolomic analysis, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, and the analysis of omics data using commercial and publicly available tools across proteomic, genomic, and metabolomic datasets. The position also includes microbiome analysis using sequencing and exposure to new animal models for austere environments.
The wider institute describes a mission focused on biomedical research that supports Department of Defense and U.S. Army needs and delivers medical solutions for force health protection and readiness.
