About this position
This postdoctoral research opportunity is offered by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), the Department of Defense’s premier research enterprise for infectious diseases, brain health, and performance optimization. The project focuses on proof-of-concept studies for developing next-generation prophylactics.
Working under a mentor’s guidance, the researcher will contribute to a highly collaborative environment that connects computational protein design with wet-lab expression, purification, and biophysical characterization. The training environment brings together structural biology, AI-enabled design, and translational vaccinology, with hands-on exposure to tools and workflows used to develop candidate protein molecules.
The opportunity emphasizes practical research experience across the design-build-test cycle. The postdoctoral researcher will apply machine-learning and AI platforms such as AlphaFold3, RFdiffusion, ThermoMPNN, Rosetta, PROSS, PRoscan, and PyMOL, while also performing protein purification and analytical characterization. The work includes evaluating purity, yield, and structural integrity, and integrating biochemical and biophysical results with downstream biological assay outcomes.
The position is located at Silver Spring, Maryland, within WRAIR’s research setting and its broader mission to generate biomedical solutions for force health protection and readiness. The institute’s work spans infectious disease research and other mission-relevant biomedical challenges, providing a setting oriented toward applied, high-impact research.
