PhD Position in Pedagogy with Specialization in Preschool Education

Örebro University is inviting applications for a PhD position in pedagogy with a specialization in preschool education, based at the Department of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences (HumUS). The position is part of the ReCEL (Research on Children’s Education and Learning) research environment, which brings together researchers and doctoral students focused on early childhood education and learning. The research group covers a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches, including didactic, ethnographic, text-analytical, and discourse-theoretical studies, and maintains extensive national and international collaborations. The doctoral project is intended for candidates interested in teaching and learning in preschool settings, with a particular emphasis on children's (ages 0–6) language, reading, and writing development, though other topics within preschool education are also welcome. Relevant research areas include the relationship between preschool curricula and educational policy, didactic questions about teaching, organization, and content, and the holistic perspective of preschool where teaching, play, learning, and care are integrated. Language-related topics may address subject didactics, preschool language, reading and writing practices, and the use of learning tools. Issues of language, especially multilingualism, may also involve norms, values, identity formation, and social justice for children. The doctoral program consists of coursework and independent research culminating in a doctoral dissertation, totaling 240 ECTS credits (four years full-time). The position includes up to 20% teaching, administration, or other research duties, with corresponding extensions to the employment period and funding. Doctoral students receive a tailored seminar series covering educational regulations, career development, and study support. The starting salary is 31,300 SEK per month. Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent, or have completed at least 240 ECTS credits (with at least 60 at advanced level). Special eligibility requires at least 90 ECTS credits in pedagogy, didactics, or educational work, including a 15-credit independent project, or a teacher education degree with a pedagogical or didactic focus. Equivalent qualifications from outside Sweden are accepted. Proficiency in both spoken and written Swedish and English is required. Applications must include a CV, degree certificates, transcripts, independent project, and other relevant documents, as well as a statement of interest (2–5 pages) outlining the proposed research theme, questions, and methodology. Documents should be in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English; other languages require certified translation. The application deadline is November 21, 2025. For further information, contact Professor Ann Quennerstedt ([email protected]) or research administrator Maja Lindgren ([email protected]). Örebro University values diversity, equality, and a respectful, open work environment.
