Postdoc in English-medium instruction
Chalmers University of Technology is offering a fully funded postdoctoral position in English-medium instruction (EMI) within the Division for Language and Communication at the Department of Communication and Learning in Science, Gothenburg, Sweden. The position sits in an interdisciplinary research environment connecting applied linguistics, higher education research, pedagogy, and educational psychology, with a particular interest in how learning, communication, and knowledge production unfold in multilingual and technologically mediated higher education settings.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop and carry out an independent research project on EMI. The project topic is open, but it must engage directly and substantially with EMI as a research phenomenon. Possible areas include teaching and learning through English, multilingual practices and translanguaging, language policy, assessment, teacher preparation and support, and academic or disciplinary literacy. The department specifically welcomes proposals that are theoretically well grounded, methodologically rigorous, and feasible within the employment period.
This position is designed for an early-career researcher with a strong publication record or strong potential in EMI or related fields. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent in a field relevant to the project, such as applied linguistics or educational science, and must have very strong written and oral English skills. The selection process will also value originality, scholarly independence, methodological breadth, collaboration, and the ability to contribute actively to a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment.
The appointment is full-time and temporary for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence throughout the employment is required, and a valid residence permit must be available by the start date. The role may include limited teaching and supervision duties, normally up to 20% of the position, depending on the successful candidate’s interests.
