PhD Position in Governance, Contestation, and Justice in the Dutch Green Hydrogen Transition

Utrecht University’s Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the governance, contestation, and justice in the Dutch green hydrogen transition. The research will explore how the Dutch government steers the green hydrogen transition, the interactions between policy, industry, and society, and the emergence of tensions and (in)justice in this pathway. The project aims to contribute to a just and socially acceptable energy transition in the Netherlands. The PhD is embedded within the Innovation Studies and Energy & Resources sections and will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Koen Frenken, Dr. Iris Wanzenböck, and Dr. Sanne Akerboom. The ideal candidate will have a background (MSc/MA) in Public Administration, Political Science, Governance, Science & Technology Studies, Innovation Studies, or a related field. Applicants should have an understanding of climate change, sustainability transitions, and energy transitions, with a keen interest in just transitions. Experience in qualitative empirical research, strong communication and social skills, and the ability to engage with stakeholders are essential. Proficiency in English is required, while Dutch language skills are advantageous but not mandatory. The position offers a competitive salary (€3,059 – €3,881/month), an initial 1-year contract extendable to 4 years, and a range of benefits including holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension scheme, flexible employment, professional development, and support for international staff. The application deadline is 20 March 2026. First-round interviews will be held from 1–3 April 2026, with possible second-round interviews on 9–10 April 2026. To apply, submit your CV and motivation letter via the Utrecht University application portal. For further information, contact Dr. Iris Wanzenböck ([email protected]) or Dr. Sanne Akerboom ([email protected]). This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in governance, sustainability, energy transitions, and social justice within the context of green hydrogen innovation.
