Memorial University’s Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, is recruiting one potentially two Master’s students, one potentially two PhD students, and one postdoctoral fellow to join a new research group in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Anticipated start dates are January, May, or September 2027. The research focuses on improving community resilience and reducing risks to buried infrastructure from natural hazards. Projects investigate interactions between natural hazards and infrastructure while integrating sustainable, transdisciplinary, and community-led solutions. Students and the postdoctoral fellow will work closely with industry partners. Research interests may include geotechnical engineering, soil-structure interaction, finite element analysis, coupled computational fluid dynamics–finite element modelling, GIS, centrifuge modelling and physical testing, buried infrastructure resilience, and engineering responses to natural hazards. Relevant tools include Abaqus, Python, ArcGIS, and PLAXIS. Applicants should demonstrate a strong foundation in solid and soil mechanics, critical thinking, programming, and academic writing. A bachelor’s degree is expected for Master’s applicants, a master’s degree for PhD applicants, and a PhD for postdoctoral applicants, preferably in civil engineering or a closely related field. A minimum CGPA of 3.5 or equivalent, or ranking in the top 20% of the graduating class, is desired. To apply, email an academic CV and transcript to Prof. Kshama Roy at [email protected], using the subject line “[Masters/PhD/Postdoc (choose one)] Student Application – [Your Full Name].” Applications remain open until filled, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
