A fully funded PhD studentship is available at the University of Surrey, starting January 2026, for UK Home students. The project, funded by EPSRC and the Department for Transport (DfT), will pioneer Digital Commentary Driving (DCD), a novel framework to enhance transparency, safety, and regulatory readiness of autonomous vehicles. Research topics include developing AI-driven methods for DCD data analysis, investigating evidence for near-miss detection, creating realistic scenarios to evaluate system trustworthiness, and advancing explainable and trusted AI for AV certification. The successful candidate will work closely with Prof Saber Fallah (Director, CAV-Lab), Dr Nick Reed, and Paul Spence, as well as colleagues from DfT.
