About
Professor Thomas Helleday is a faculty member at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. His research focuses on cancer biology, specifically mechanisms related to DNA damage response, replication stress, and metabolic pathways in cancer cells. Recent publications include work on the effects of the anabolic steroid stanozolol on mutagenesis, as well as studies targeting MTHFD2 and OGG1 to enhance cancer treatment efficacy.

The Helleday Laboratory at Karolinska Institutet offers a postdoctoral position in DNA repair and translational drug discovery, situated within a world-leading research environment renowned for developing first-in-class therapeutics. The laboratory bridges medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, and clinical application, focusing on targeting DNA repair pathways relevant to cancer, inflammation, and fibrosis. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work at the forefront of PROTAC and small-molecule drug development, with direct opportunities to translate discoveries into therapeutic strategies. Your mission will involve advancing medicinal chemistry efforts aimed at developing novel therapeutics targeting DNA repair enzymes, particularly DNA glycosylases. Responsibilities include the design, synthesis, and optimisation of small-molecule inhibitors, development of PROTACs, and close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to evaluate compounds in biochemical and cellular assays. You will contribute to assay development, including PROTAC degradation and mechanistic studies, and prepare scientific publications, presentations, and grant applications. To be eligible, candidates must hold a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a Swedish PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a closely related discipline. A minimum of 4 years of research experience in organic chemistry with significant emphasis on medicinal chemistry is required. Demonstrated expertise in DNA repair, particularly DNA glycosylases, and proven experience in developing small-molecule inhibitors targeting DNA repair enzymes are essential. Significant experience in PROTAC design and development, and a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications are required. Completion of the doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. Additional qualifications include experience in PROTAC assay development, structure-based drug design, computational chemistry tools, prodrug development, covalent inhibitor design, biophysical and enzymatic assays, ADME and pharmacokinetic optimisation, and experience in international and interdisciplinary environments. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities, offering a creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. The Science For Life Laboratory in Solna provides state-of-the-art infrastructure and access to a highly collaborative and international research community. As a state university, KI offers several benefits through its collective agreement. This is a full-time, temporary position for two years, with the possibility of extension. The monthly salary is provided, and the start date is according to agreement. The application deadline is 25 May 2026. Applicants must submit their application through the Varbi recruitment system, including a PhD certificate, a complete resumé, a list of publications, and a summary of current work in English or Swedish. For further information, contact Professor Thomas Helleday or Dr. Ann-Sofie Jemth. Join the Helleday Laboratory and contribute to groundbreaking research in DNA repair and drug discovery, making a difference in global health.
