About this position

The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) at Technische Universität Berlin, in cooperation with Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, is a joint doctoral programme in mathematics within the Cluster of Excellence MATH+. It is a full-time PhD pathway in Berlin, taught in English, with the dissertation possible in English or German.

The programme covers a wide range of research areas, including geometry and topology, algebraic geometry and number theory, stochastics and mathematical finance, discrete mathematics and optimisation, discrete geometry, numerical mathematics, applied analysis, and mathematics for AI. This makes the BMS a strong option for students seeking advanced training in pure and applied mathematics with access to a broad research environment across Berlin’s major universities.

The BMS offers structured research and supervision, research training and discussion, and support services for international doctoral candidates. Practical support includes a buddy programme, welcome event, cultural and linguistic preparation, a One-Stop Office for administrative issues, and a German as a Foreign Language course for students with little or no German. There are also teaching opportunities at all three participating universities, which can provide valuable academic experience.

Funding depends on the application route. Phase I applicants may apply for admission with scholarship funding, while Phase II applicants are matched with BMS/MATH+ faculty members and the BMS itself does not award funding. The school also notes no tuition fees. Additional family support is available: Phase I scholarship students can receive up to 400 EUR per month extra for a child. Housing support includes a small number of reserved rooms in student villages for new BMS students, though Berlin housing is competitive and early searching is advised.

Application deadlines are 1 December 2026 for Phase I applications requiring scholarship admission and 1 April 2027 for general Phase I admission without funding. Phase II timing depends on the start of the funding contract. Applicants should submit via the BMS website and choose the appropriate track based on their funding and doctoral-entry situation.

What's required

Applicants for Phase I must meet the admission requirements for the master's studies route and may apply either with scholarship funding or for general admission without funding. The programme is taught in English; applicants should be prepared to study and complete the dissertation in English or German. International students with little or no German may receive support for one preparatory German as a Foreign Language course. The post does not specify GPA, test scores, or other formal academic thresholds.

How to apply

Apply through the Berlin Mathematical School website at https://www.math-berlin.de. Choose the appropriate application track: Phase I for master's-level entry and scholarship consideration, or Phase II if you are seeking a doctoral match with BMS/MATH+ faculty. Review the application periods carefully and submit before the relevant deadline.
