About this position
CIFRE-Defence is a paid three-year doctoral funding scheme linking a French company with a recognised research laboratory in France. The student works on a defence-related research topic while dividing time between the company and the academic laboratory, gaining both research training and practical professional experience.
The programme is funded by the French Ministry of Defence through its Agency for Defence Innovation (AID) and administered with ANRT. A successful project is supported through an industrial employment contract, with the company paying the doctoral salary while the AID contributes to the employer’s costs. The scheme is designed for projects aligned with defence priorities and is intended to foster work that can advance from initial research into later-stage development where appropriate.
Research topics may sit within areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cyber security, materials science, photonics, shipbuilding, or the humanities and social sciences. The project must be built around collaboration between the company and a French research laboratory, and the laboratory must be able to host the doctoral research.
This is a selective, team-based opportunity rather than a broad open competition, with projects assessed on their fit with defence priorities and the strength of the company-lab partnership.
Funding details
Paid 3-year PhD with a gross salary of at least €1,957 per month. The French Ministry of Defence, through AID, pays the employer €14,000 annually (€42,000 over 3 years).
What's required
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification such as an engineering diploma. They must be citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, have not yet obtained a doctoral degree, and must not already be enrolled in another doctoral programme. The dissertation topic must fit one of the AID priority areas. The project must be hosted by a company incorporated under French law and accepted by a recognised research laboratory in France, and the laboratory must have a supervisor qualified to supervise PhD research (HDR). Applicants should also be at the very start of the project, with no more than 9 months spent working on it and no more than 9 months enrolled while working on the final thesis.
How to apply
The laboratory or company usually initiates the application and selects the candidate. The application is submitted through the Ministry’s digital platform. A candidate nomination is recommended but not mandatory at submission, after which AID reviews the files and selects projects for funding.
