About this position
Co-sponsored doctoral grants from the French Ministry of Defence support PhD research on topics relevant to French defence, through the Agence de l’innovation de défense (AID). The programme funds a wide range of projects each year and is designed for candidates whose research aligns with the agency’s priorities in the natural and engineering sciences, as well as defence-related social sciences.
The grant is intended for doctoral research carried out in a French laboratory, with the funding paid to the employer, usually the laboratory, rather than directly to the student. Most awards are co-funded, meaning the AID covers part of the cost while another organisation covers the remainder, with the supervisor acting as the intermediary. The advert highlights that successful projects are assessed on scientific quality, the laboratory, the supervision, and the relevance of the thesis topic to defence.
The opportunity spans areas such as biology, the environment, flows and structures, robotics, materials and energy, nanotechnology, photonics, and related social sciences. The scheme is broad in scope, with around 100 to 130 PhD projects funded each year.
For candidates, this is a structured doctoral funding route embedded in a French research environment, and it is especially suited to projects where a supervisor can secure co-funding and the topic fits AID priorities.
