About this position
The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory (EL) offers a research appointment for post-bachelor and graduate students in an applied, mentor-guided laboratory environment. EL is one of the seven laboratories within USACE-ERDC and supports environmental challenges for the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, and the nation through environmental science and engineering research and development.
Participants work alongside researchers in a broad, interdisciplinary environment spanning ecosystem science and technology, environmental resiliency, environmental sensing, ecological modeling and forecasting, risk and decision science, environmentally sustainable materials, systems biology, climate change, computational chemistry, environmental chemistry, and environmental security. The appointment is designed to build practical research experience while exposing participants to modern tools, technologies, and techniques used in real-world laboratory settings.
Possible project areas include advanced electrical and power systems, circuit simulation and physical testing, resilient electronic hardware and rugged enclosures, chemical and advanced sensor design, robotics and integrated sensing platforms, environmental sensing and ecological research at lab, mesocosm, and field scales, and data acquisition, analysis, and simulation modeling.
This is an opportunity to develop technical and professional skills in interdisciplinary STEM research while collaborating and networking with students, post-graduates, and researchers across multiple fields. The environment emphasizes hands-on problem solving, research-to-application experience, and work that connects engineering, science, and environmental mission needs.
