About this position

Manchester Metropolitan University is advertising a fully funded PhD studentship, From Fan to Father: Exploring the Role of Football Fan Communities in Supporting New Fatherhood, with an expected start in October 2027.

Supervised by Leah Gillooly, Ben Kerrane and Dr Lorraine Bedwell, the project investigates whether football fan communities can support men as they begin fatherhood. It focuses on social bonds, belonging, parenting support and the role of sports communities in helping new fathers participate more fully in childcare and parenting practices.

The research will use qualitative methods to explore the transformative potential of sports fan communities and its implications for sports clubs and governing bodies. The project sits at the intersection of marketing, sports fandom, sociology and fatherhood research.

The studentship is open to UK and international applicants. It covers home and international tuition fees for the full three-year award and provides a standard UKRI-determined stipend. Applicants should consult the full advertisement for eligibility and application requirements.

Applications should be submitted using the linked application form. Questions may be directed to Leah Gillooly at [email protected].
