About this position
Jiaqi Ye, Assistant Professor in AI and Robotics at the University of Birmingham, is seeking a PhD student for research in robot perception, robotics and computer vision within the School of Engineering.
The research explores how robots can move beyond recognising objects to understanding their physical properties and interacting with them reliably in complex, changing environments. The work combines computer vision, multimodal sensing and deep learning to support robust robotic perception and action.
Potential directions include inferring object geometry and physical properties from vision and other sensing modalities; learning rich 3D and multimodal representations for measurement, inspection and robotic interaction; and connecting perception with prediction, planning and action on real robotic systems.
The student will work in an interdisciplinary research community with access to research facilities across the University of Birmingham, developing methods that connect artificial intelligence and sensing with practical robotic automation.
This is a competitive School of Engineering studentship opportunity for a Home-fee-status PhD applicant.
