Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship

Opportunity alert for researchers: the Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship Programme 2027 in Japan is now open for applications.

This is a fully funded 6-month postdoctoral fellowship designed for researchers in Natural Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, and Agriculture. The fellowship supports research at a Japanese host institution and is intended for international collaboration and advanced research experience.

Funding includes a monthly allowance of JPY 220,000, an arrival fund of JPY 120,000, round-trip economy airfare, and overseas travel insurance. The host professor is expected to help arrange accommodation for the selected fellow.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must be non-Japanese nationals, hold a PhD, be 45 years old or younger, have a full-time job in their home country and plan to return after the fellowship, have no long-term stay history in Japan, obtain acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying, and have sufficient English or Japanese ability.

Application window: 1 June 2026 to 30 June 2026 (Japan Standard Time). The fellowship period is generally six months between June 2027 and March 2028.
