About this position
The University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in the Applied Electrochemistry and Catalysis (ELCAT) research group, Faculty of Applied Engineering, Belgium.
The PhD project focuses on redox flow batteries for renewable energy storage. The researcher will investigate how electrolyte composition, battery design, and operating conditions influence performance, charge/discharge rate, stability, lifetime, crossover, power density, and electrolyte precipitation. Particular attention will be given to novel titanium-cerium redox chemistry and electrolyte formulation, including acid type.
The successful candidate will conduct laboratory experiments involving electrochemical systems, flow-field design, membranes, scale-up, and battery stacking. Duties include preparing and defending a PhD thesis, publishing scientific articles or patents, and contributing to limited teaching and research-support activities. ELCAT provides an active research environment with more than 40 researchers and state-of-the-art electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering facilities.
Applicants should hold, or be about to obtain, a Master's degree in chemical engineering, applied engineering/industrial science with a chemistry focus, a related discipline, or an equivalent qualification. Excellent academic results, knowledge of mass transfer and reactor engineering, laboratory safety, research motivation, organizational skills, and good written and spoken English are expected. Electrochemical or redox flow battery experience is advantageous; C1 English and recommendation letters are considered additional strengths.
The scholarship is initially for one year and can be renewed following positive evaluation for up to four years. The stipend follows the doctoral scholarship holder pay scales for Contract Research Staff, with ecocheques, internet-connectivity support, and commuting benefits. Work will take place mainly at Campus Drie Eiken in Wilrijk and Campus Groenenborger in Antwerp.
Applications close on November 12, 2026. Submit the online application form with a motivation letter and academic CV through the University of Antwerp job platform.
