About this position
Monash University is offering a PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Safe & Sustainable Electrolytes for Next-Generation Metal Batteries at the Clayton campus in Australia.
This project is based in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, and is supervised by Dr Mega Kar. The research focuses on the design and development of safe and sustainable electrolyte materials for advanced energy storage systems, with strong relevance to electrochemistry, materials science, battery technologies, polymer science, and energy storage.
Research directions include:
- Advanced electrolytes for rechargeable multivalent batteries, including low-cost electrolyte systems for emerging chemistries such as calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn).
- Polymer electrolytes for solid-state metal batteries, including the design and synthesis of novel solid polymer electrolytes, improved interfacial stability, suppression of dendrite formation, and enhanced cycling performance.
The successful candidate will use synthetic chemistry, advanced materials characterisation, and electrochemical evaluation to develop high-performance battery systems and establish structure-property relationships. The project is described as highly collaborative, interdisciplinary, and internationally connected.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have or be close to completing a Bachelor Honours (H1 or equivalent) and/or a Master's degree with an excellent academic record. Strong written and verbal English skills are required, and experience in battery electrolytes, ionic liquids, solid polymer electrolytes, organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, electrochemical testing, or materials characterisation is desirable. Applicants who already hold a PhD are not eligible.
Funding: 3.5-year fixed-term scholarship with a tax-free stipend of AUD $37,145 per annum (2026 full-time rate, pro-rata).
How to apply: submit an online application via Monash University’s graduate research portal. Applications are reviewed as they are received, and early applications are encouraged. The closing date is 30 November 2026, 11:55pm AEDT.
