About this position
This PhD grant is offered within the 4-OCEANS project, Human History of Marine Life: Extraction, Knowledge, Drivers and Consumption of Marine Resources, c. 100 BCE to c. 1860 CE. The project investigates how knowledge about marine living resources was produced, circulated, and used in the modern era, with a particular focus on the Atlantic world.
The successful candidate will contribute to research in early-modern history, especially at the intersection of environmental history, marine history, and cultural history. The work involves identifying and analysing sources for European and African natural history, tracing vernacular knowledge and systems of knowledge production in Renaissance Europe, and studying aquatic megafauna, historical occurrences, and the human use of animals. A further part of the project is the creation of open, interoperable databases of sources and citations, including quantification of occurrences, as well as scientific reporting, conference participation, and co-authored articles.
The grant is hosted by CHAM – Centre for the Humanities of NOVA University of Lisbon, at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas. The panel listed in the call includes Nina Vieira, Ana Catarina Garcia, Tiago Viúla Faria, and Isabel Gomes Almeida.
