About this position

DTU is advertising a PhD scholarship in molecular biology and bioreceptor engineering for biosensors within the BRIGHT institute in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark. The project is part of the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network BUG-ID and focuses on improving infection diagnostics by combining molecular biology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology.

The research will initially center on identifying nucleic acid aptamers that target microbial biomarkers, with opportunities to explore alternative receptor technologies such as protein-based receptors. The PhD student will work in the research group of Prof. Ivan Mijakovic and collaborate with an international consortium on receptor characterization and integration into graphene-based biosensors.

Key work includes establishing and applying SELEX methods, designing and engineering biological recognition molecules, conducting experiments, analyzing data, publishing results, and participating in consortium training and outreach. The post is especially relevant for candidates with strong experimental skills in PCR, DNA manipulation, molecular cloning, nucleic acid biochemistry, recombinant protein production, and biochemical binding assays.

Eligibility highlights include a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS or equivalent), strong English skills, and compliance with transnational mobility rules for Marie Skłodowska-Curie appointments. The position is full-time and runs for 3 years. The salary is funded under the Marie Curie scheme, with a minimum base salary plus PhD supplement and pension contributions.

Deadline: 29 November 2026. Applicants must submit one PDF online containing a motivation letter, CV, and transcripts/diploma documents. The post notes that candidates may apply before receiving the master’s degree, but cannot start before it is awarded.

Funding details

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network funded PhD scholarship. Salary follows the Marie S. Curie compensation scheme and grant agreement; minimum DKK 30,264.08 base salary plus DKK 1,580.90 PhD supplement, with DTU pension contribution of 18.07%. Family allowance may be available.

What's required

Applicants must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent. Strong practical background in experimental molecular biology is required, including PCR, DNA manipulation and molecular cloning. Experience with nucleic acid biochemistry, recombinant protein production or related experimental techniques is expected, along with good analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to independently plan and troubleshoot experiments, and good written and spoken English. Experience with aptamer selection (SELEX), protein engineering or biochemical binding assays is an advantage. Candidates must meet Marie Skłodowska-Curie transnational mobility rules and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years before appointment.

How to apply

Submit the complete online application through the Apply now link. Prepare one PDF in English containing a motivation letter, CV, and grade transcripts plus BSc/MSc diploma with grading scale description. Apply before the deadline; late applications are not considered.
