About this position

The Military University of Technology in Warsaw, Poland, invites applications for a PhD Student scientific scholarship in the Institute of Optoelectronics. The project, IBIS-FC: Future Implants – Smart, Biodegradable, and Effective Fracture Treatment, focuses on additive manufacturing of biodegradable zinc-based implant structures for fracture treatment.

The research will cover implant design, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), process-parameter optimization, safe metal-powder handling, post-processing and comprehensive materials characterization. Activities include preparing builds, evaluating implant geometries and manufacturing quality, measuring dimensional accuracy and density/porosity, examining microstructure and surface condition, testing mechanical properties, and conducting process–structure–property analysis. Fellows will also analyze data, document results and contribute to scientific publications.

The scholarship is PLN 6,073.75 per month for up to 32 months, with a planned start in November 2026. Funding is provided by the Foundation for Polish Science through the FIRST TEAM programme, co-financed by the European Union under the FENG 2021–2027 framework.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in materials, mechanical, manufacturing or biomedical engineering, metallurgy, applied physics or a related field, have excellent English, and be enrolled in a Doctoral School in Poland. LPBF or related metal additive-manufacturing experience is strongly preferred; CAD, slicing, post-processing and characterization experience are advantageous. Applications must include a cover letter, CV with photograph and consent form, Master's diploma, and proof of doctoral enrollment. The deadline is 2 November 2026.
