About this position

PhD Student – Scientific Scholarship in Biodegradable Implants and Smart Sensing

The Military University of Technology in Warsaw, Poland, is offering a doctoral research scholarship within the IBIS-FC project, “Future Implants – Smart, Biodegradable, and Effective Fracture Treatment.” The project is hosted by the Institute of Optoelectronics and focuses on biomedical engineering, materials science, polymer science, surface engineering, and smart sensing.

The researcher will work on surface modification of biodegradable zinc-based implants; preparation, formulation, and deposition of biodegradable polymer coatings; and development of sensor-compatible functional interfaces. Activities include surface functionalization, protective and biofunctional coating development, sensor-compatible layer integration, and characterization of surface chemistry, morphology, roughness, wettability, coating quality, degradation behavior, and sensor response. The role also involves data analysis, interface optimization, documentation, and preparation of scientific publications.

Candidates should hold a master's degree in materials science or engineering, chemistry or polymer science, surface engineering, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, or a related discipline. Excellent English and motivation for interdisciplinary research are required. Experience with biodegradable polymers, coatings, biomaterials, surface modification, coating deposition, sensor integration, electrochemical sensing, electrical measurements, or techniques such as SEM/EDS, AFM, profilometry, FTIR, Raman, XPS, contact-angle analysis, thermal analysis, and corrosion testing will strengthen an application.

The scholarship is PLN 6,073.75 per month for up to 32 months, with a planned start in November 2026. Applicants must be enrolled in a Doctoral School in Poland and may not hold another scholarship funded by the Foundation for Polish Science. Applications must include a cover letter, CV with photo, signed data-processing consent form, master's diploma, and proof of doctoral-school enrollment. The deadline is 2 November 2026.

Funding details

A scientific scholarship of PLN 6,073.75 per month is available for up to 32 months, with a planned start in November 2026. The project is funded by the Foundation for Polish Science under the FIRST TEAM programme, co-financed by the European Union through the European Funds for Smart Economy 2021–2027.

What's required

Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in Materials Science or Engineering, Chemistry or Polymer Science, Surface Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related field.
