[Funding covers fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.] PhD studentship at the University of Exeter on "One read, one cell: Decoding cell identity with long-read sequencing" . This project sits at the intersection of functional genomics, epigenomics, mathematics, and computer science. It aims to resolve cell-type-specific epigenetic profiles directly from long-read sequencing data, without the need to physically separate cells from complex tissues. Using methylation patterns from O...

[Full tuition fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.] PhD studentship at the University of Exeter on developing a new variant effect predictor for multiple missense variants in the same protein molecule. This EPSRC-funded project tackles an important challenge in clinical genomics: most variant interpretation tools assess missense changes one at a time, even though many patients carry multiple variants in the same gene or protein. The project will develop and validate a new computa...

About this position

[4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD studentship including tuition fees paid directly to the University, a stipend of £21,805 for 2026/27, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.]

This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia focuses on a major question in evolutionary genetics: why sexually antagonistic genes persist in populations even when they are harmful in one sex. Building on recent work from the supervisor’s lab, the project will investigate a set of consistent sexually antagonistic genes discovered across independent studies in Drosophila melanogaster.

The research moves beyond gene discovery to ask what makes these loci special, how they shape sex-specific fitness and life-history traits, and what molecular mechanisms underlie sexual conflict and its resolution. The student will work with a combination of bioinformatics, genome engineering, and sequencing technologies to identify and characterise candidate loci across studies, validate their effects using CRISPR-Cas9 allele swaps in fruit flies, and explore regulatory mechanisms such as gene expression and alternative splicing.

The project sits in a strong interdisciplinary environment spanning evolutionary genetics, molecular genetics, biological statistics, and CRISPR genome engineering. It also offers access to wider expertise and collaborative opportunities across the broader Norwich Research Park, including neighbouring institutes working in long-read sequencing and single-cell transcriptomics.

The project is framed as a 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership studentship.
