About this position
This PhD studentship is based in Aeronautics at Imperial College London and focuses on the chemistry of aircraft contrails and their role in aviation’s climate impact. The project asks you to investigate how these artificial ice clouds may modify the atmosphere by providing surfaces for atmospheric chemistry, rather than only by affecting climate through their physical presence.
You will build expertise in simulation of ice clouds and atmospheric chemistry-transport modelling using Imperial’s high-performance computing facilities. The research also connects modelling with broader questions of aircraft design, aviation policy, and informed decision making about mitigation. Depending on how the project develops, you may also explore satellite and in-situ evaluation of aviation impacts, technical mechanisms for impact reduction, and operational constraints.
You will be part of the Aerospace Environmental Impacts Simulation (AEIS) group and work within the Contrail Research Centre, which is part of the Brahmal Vasudevan Institute for Sustainable Aviation. The advert describes a collaborative research environment spanning aircraft exhaust simulation, satellite-based contrail detection, atmospheric science, and aviation sustainability, with opportunities to attend conferences and engage with international researchers.
