About this position

[UKRI stipend of £21,805 per year (2026/27 rate) plus full tuition fee waiver for a fully funded three-year PhD studentship.]

Bangor University’s Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre is offering a fully funded three-year PhD studentship in Converged Fibre, RF and Optical Wireless Networks.

The project sits within a strong telecommunications research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and links to more than 35 global industry partners. Research themes include next-generation fibre and wireless networks, optical wireless communications, advanced signal processing, telecommunications systems, and future 5G/6G technologies. The studentship is supported through three major projects, including two funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and one via the Flintshire & Wrexham Investment Zone Research and Innovation Programme.

The award provides a UKRI stipend of £21,805 per year at the 2026/27 rate, plus a full tuition fee waiver. The appointment is for three years initially, with the possibility of extension subject to future funding, and candidates are expected to start as soon as possible.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant physical science, engineering, or technology discipline. Useful experience includes optical, wireless, or optical wireless communications; joint communications and sensing; data networks; digital or analogue signal processing; mobile communications; high-speed digital circuit design; and computer programming. The project also values strong mathematical, analytical, and experimental skills, together with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Successful candidates will conduct theoretical and/or experimental research, publish findings in journals and conferences, present work at meetings and workshops, operate laboratory equipment, assist with proposals, support undergraduate project activity, and take part in training and development. Previous research experience, peer-reviewed publications, and knowledge of 5G/6G technologies are advantageous.

For an informal discussion, contact Professor Jianming Tang at [email protected]. Non-UK/EU nationals may need an ATAS certificate. Apply via the Bangor University application portal before the closing date of 24 November 2026.
