About this position
Umeå University is advertising a 2-year postdoctoral scholarship in Ultrafast Science within the Department of Physics, hosted by the Ultrafast Nanoscience group led by Nicolò Maccaferri. The project is titled Ultrafast dynamics in quantum materials and focuses on how ultrashort light pulses can reveal and control the fastest processes in quantum materials and nanostructures.
The research sits at the intersection of experimental condensed matter physics, ultrafast spectroscopy, photonics, magnetism, and materials science. The successful candidate will investigate charge, spin, lattice, and hybrid light–matter dynamics on femtosecond timescales using advanced optical spectroscopy and temperature-dependent experiments. The group works in a collaborative, international environment with access to advanced ultrafast spectroscopy platforms and a broad research profile spanning condensed matter, nanophotonics, functional materials, photochemistry, and structural biology.
Funding: the scholarship is financed by the Kempe Foundation at 360,000 SEK per year, is tax-free, and runs for two years. The position is full-time, with access from 1 September 2026 or by agreement.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in experimental physics or an equivalent doctoral degree, with strong expertise in ultrashort light pulses and experimental techniques for ultrafast light–matter interaction. Experience with LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, sample fabrication/handling, cryogenic measurements, and independent experimental initiative is considered meritorious. Fluent spoken and written English is required.
Application deadline: 31 July 2026. Applications must be submitted through Umeå University’s Varbi e-recruitment system and should include a motivation letter, CV with publication list, doctoral degree certificate or proof of expected completion, thesis copy, other supporting documents, and contact details for two references.
For more information, contact Nicolò Maccaferri at [email protected].
