About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellow position in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. The research program focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which bacterial pathogens deploy type III secretion system (T3SS) effector proteins to manipulate host cells. This doctoral project will specifically investigate the role of bacterial effector chaperones in regulating effector stability, secretion, and functional targeting during infection.
The successful candidate will systematically dissect chaperone–effector interaction networks in enteropathogens using genetic and proteomics-based approaches. Responsibilities include generating and characterizing bacterial strains with targeted deletions of T3SS effector chaperones, investigating the impact of chaperone loss on effector expression, stability, and secretion, and applying quantitative proteomics and interaction mapping to identify chaperone-associated protein networks. Integration of genetic, biochemical, and proteomics data will be key to understanding how effector chaperones coordinate the bacterial virulence program.
Additional tasks involve analysis and interpretation of large-scale proteomics datasets, presentation of research at scientific meetings, contribution to peer-reviewed publications, and participation in the supervision of BSc and MSc students. The fellow will enroll in the Ghent University doctoral training programme and work towards obtaining a doctoral degree.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (preferably) in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related field. Strong interest in molecular microbiology, bacterial pathogenesis, or host–pathogen interactions is required. Experience with molecular biology, bacterial genetics, microbiological techniques, or protein biochemistry is considered an asset. Interest in proteomics, systems biology, or interaction proteomics is an advantage. Candidates should be highly motivated, possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and have good communication skills in English. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment is expected.
The position offers a full-time doctoral fellowship for up to 48 months, with salary at 100% of the net AAP member salary, tax-free grant, and amount determined by family status and seniority. Ghent University staff benefits include training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The contract will start on 01/09/2026 at the earliest.
