About this position
Doctoral Position in Groundwater Microbial and Viral Ecology and Environmental Bioinformatics at ETH Zürich
The Geomitigation of Greenhouse Gases group at ETH Zürich is recruiting a highly motivated doctoral candidate to join a newly funded SNSF interdisciplinary project. The project examines how microbial and viral communities shape carbon cycling in groundwater systems, combining environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, viral ecology, environmental genomics, hydrogeochemistry, and bioinformatics.
The successful candidate will investigate microbial and viral diversity, metabolic activity, and evolutionary adaptation across groundwater age gradients. The work involves analysis of metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and viral sequencing datasets, integration with hydrogeochemical measurements, and laboratory work including DNA and RNA extractions as well as supporting measurements of cell abundance and activity. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in subsurface biogeochemistry, environmental bioinformatics, and multi-omics approaches.
Applicants should hold an MSc in microbiology, microbial ecology, bioinformatics, computational biology, geobiology, or a closely related field. Strong experience with metagenomic analysis, Linux/Unix command line use, and programming in Python, R, or Bash is expected. A solid understanding of microbial ecology, physiology, or metabolism is important. Experience with genome-resolved metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, comparative genomics, HPC, or environmental DNA/RNA extraction is advantageous. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required.
The position is fully funded for 48 months and is based at ETH Zürich in Switzerland. The application deadline is 30 November 2026, and the expected start date is 1 March 2027. Applicants must apply via ETH’s online portal and submit a cover letter, CV, transcripts, a digital copy of the master diploma, and contact details for two academic references.
