About this position
This doctoral project is based in the Department of Medical Radiation Physics at Lund University and carried out within the university’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) research group. The group focuses on developing new techniques for quantitative MRI using different contrast mechanisms.
The research topic is diffusion MRI (dMRI), with a particular emphasis on improving how diffusion is encoded and analysed so that MRI can reveal more about tissue microstructure in the living human body. The project aims to distinguish and study properties such as cell density, cell shape, cell size, blood volume, and cell membrane permeability, with these measurements evaluated as tentative imaging biomarkers for better diagnostics and disease monitoring.
As a doctoral student, you will work on methods for the accurate and precise assessment of microstructural changes in the brain in various neurological conditions. The work may include image reconstruction, deep learning, programming of the MRI scanner, experimental work, and analysis of patient data. The projects are expected to contribute to publications in scientific journals and to the doctoral thesis.
The position is embedded in a research environment that combines medical imaging, quantitative MRI, and computational method development. The advert indicates that the work will be supervised within the MR physics group at Lund University.

What's required
Applicants must have a second-cycle qualification, or at least 240 credits with at least 60 credits at second-cycle level, or equivalent knowledge. For the specific subject of medical radiation physics, applicants must have a degree in medical physics or an equivalent foreign qualification, or another higher-education programme giving basic eligibility for doctoral studies (240 credits) with at least 60 credits directly relevant to the doctoral education and an independent second-cycle thesis of at least 30 credits. Strong results in relevant courses are expected, especially in mathematics, mathematical statistics, physics, signal processing, and computational methods. The selection particularly values proficiency in spoken and written English, documented knowledge of medical imaging and especially MRI and diffusion MRI, mathematical modelling and numerical optimisation, programming skills in Python, MATLAB or equivalent, image processing, image registration, image correction, deep learning, and experience from project work in scientific or academic environments involving MRI and computational methods. Personal qualities such as independence, analytical ability, creativity, problem-solving skills, and ability to collaborate are also important.
