About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is advertising a fully funded doctoral position on traction inverters for heavy-duty vehicles within the Division of Electric Power Engineering in Gothenburg, Sweden. The position sits in the research unit Electrical Machines and Power Electronics, an active environment focused on electric machines, traction inverters, high-frequency power electronics and charging, electric drive systems, and battery energy storage.

The project is part of a larger development effort with the Swedish government and an industrial partner to advance sustainable powertrain technology for heavy-duty vehicles. The doctoral student will focus on the design and control of advanced power electronics in traction inverters, aiming to improve compactness, reliability, EMI, controllability, and efficiency. The work combines theory, simulation, prototyping, and experimental verification in a collaborative research environment with strong links to industry.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in electrical engineering with power electronics and control as the main direction, plus strong knowledge of power electronics, traction inverters, DC/DC converters, and their control. Experience with Simulink, PLECS, and LT-Spice, and with prototyping and experimental testing of power electronics and drive systems, is required. Helpful additional experience includes electromagnetics, electrical machines, motor control, PCB design, CAD, collaboration with industrial experts, and documented publications.

The doctoral student will take advanced courses in the Graduate School of Electrical Engineering, develop scientific ideas, communicate research results orally and in writing, and contribute to teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate level for up to 20% of working time. The position is fully funded from the start, with a fixed-term appointment of four years and a possible extension of up to one additional year based on teaching duties. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month. Chalmers notes that doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period and that a valid residence permit must be available by the study start date.
