About this position

This EngD position at the University of Twente focuses on designing a framework for the digitalization of condition-based maintenance for the Hengelo Lock Complex, in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management’s executive agency. The project aims to develop a scientific and practical framework for a structural health monitoring (SHM) system, enabling automated, continuous assessment of lock conditions with minimal human intervention. Research topics include analyzing the structural and mechanical behavior of lock components, reviewing relevant regulations and guidelines, evaluating current maintenance practices and SHM technologies, and conducting cost–benefit assessments of sensor deployment and measurement strategies.

The work sits at the intersection of structural and mechanical engineering, asset management, and Civionics (sensor-based SHM of civil infrastructure). Supervision is provided by Dr. Farid Vahdatikhaki and Dr. Roland Kromanis from the University of Twente, and Mr.

Sukon Wu from Rijkswaterstaat. The successful candidate will work closely with Rijkswaterstaat to deliver a design artifact with real-world impact.

The position starts in January 2026 and is based in Enschede/Hengelo. Applicants should be top M.Sc. graduates in relevant fields, with high English proficiency and preferably some Dutch language skills.

The role requires systematic, innovative thinking, independence, teamwork, and strong communication skills. Daily presence at both the university and Rijkswaterstaat branch is expected. The offer includes a two-year fulltime EngD contract with full employee status, pension and health care benefits, a tailor-made educational program (at least 6 months, 30 EC), a gross monthly salary of €3,029, annual holiday and year-end bonuses, a minimum of 29 holidays per year, and mentorship for professional and personal growth. Upon successful completion, the candidate receives a certified and recognized Engineering Doctorate (EngD) degree and registration as a Technological Designer in the Dutch KIVI register.

The Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente is a leading center for smart production, processes, and devices, with strong connections to research institutes such as Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Center, and Digital Society Institute. Applications must be submitted by November 15th, including a CV, motivation letter, and M.Sc. degree overview.

Interviews will be held between November 15 and 30, 2025.
